African Hearts-Girls Home
African Hearts has worked for many years in the slums of Kampala, ministering to the boys and teens living there, providing regular meals, and pulling many boys out of that life and providing a home, education, and hope for their futures. There has not been an alternative for girls who are orphaned and living in the same slum area-they are often recruited into prostitution at a young age in exchange for food and a roof over their head. Lutaaya Abdul, the Executive Director of African Hearts has worked in the Kisneyi slum for 16 years. According to Lutaaya, approximately 80% of the girls in that area are either currently involved in prostitution, or have "aged out" of the lifestyle, living with no hope for a better future.
A safe environment for these girls is crucial, and so the vision to start a home for young ladies was birthed in the hearts of of Lutaaya and his staff. GO Overflow is coming alongside their vision, as they seek God's plan to provide land and a building suitable to house these girls, a house mother and other staff.
Girls in the home will receive counseling, facilitating healing from the abuse they endured and the emotional scars. In addition, many of these young women have become addicted to drugs, are pregnant, or have sexually transmitted diseases-all of these issues will be addressed with love and compassion. Other areas of focus for the home will include:
• Sharing the truth and grace of Jesus Christ, and the healing only he can provide
• Structure and boundaries to teach responsibility
• Education and vocational training, allowing for a future of self sufficiency through social enterprise
A detailed plan for the home has been created, including facility, staffing and boarding needs. Please pray for these girls, and for God's provision to make this vision a reality.
