In the village of Kogaja, there is a small stream of water that forms a pool, and during the rainy season this is the only location where villagers-and those in surrounding villages-can come for water. This one water source becomes the location for livestock to drink, motorcycles to be washed, and yes, drinking water to be obtained! It was shocking to see people drink directly from this stream without boiling the water. It's not shocking to learn that local children are dying from Cholera, Typhoid and Schistosomiasis.
People come from 25 kilometers (15 miles) to get water at the only source of water in Kogaja village, Tanzania. A local pastor, Bishop John Obume, says that many people wake up at 3 a.m. daily, arrive to the water stream by 6 a.m., in order to walk home by 9 a.m. with water for that day. A 22-liter Jerry can (5 gallons of water) weighs 40 lbs. The woman and children carry these cans on their heads because even the strongest of arms are exhausted after 15 miles up and down the steep hills.
We were told that this stream in Kogaja only flows in the raining season. In the dry season, people walk even further to Lake Victoria in order to get the water they need.
We discovered that a water-well and water distribution system had been drilled by a medical ministry to combat the problem of all the water related diseases and deaths in the Mara region...where Kogaja is located! Nyambogo Village, where this flagship project was implemented, was only 25 miles from our village of Kogaja. This water project empowers over 20,000 people with clean water. The water serve 5 villages and is pumped to homes and schools. GO Overflow was able to meet with the project team, and they provided every detail of the implementation process and the related costs. In fact, they agreed to partner offering guidance to insure our success if we were to embark on such a project in Kogaja.
"The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the Lord will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them." Isaiah 41:17
Every local physician and school administrator we met in the area told us that polluted WATER is the biggest issue causing sickness and death in their community. Without a doubt the majority of sickness, including Cholera, Typhoid, and Schisto could be prevented IF people had clean water.
Within 3 months of the start date, a new water project could be completed and give 20,000 people in 5 villages clean water. This project will literally save lives. Please pray for the people of this region, and consider partnering with GO Overflow as we trust God to provide the funds needed to bring healthy water to Kogaja and surrounding areas!
